According to a Nielson//NetRatings survey, close to one million Australians accessed online dating sites in September 2004.

A CHOICE Online survey in October 2004 asked readers whether they’d tried or were interested in online dating 26% of respondents said they’d tried it with some success 11% said they’d tried it with no success and 19% said they hadn’t tried it, but were interested.

So why do people do it?...

In a US survey, 44% of respondents thought people had a better chance of meeting a partner online than in a singles bar, while a Swedish survey suggested that internet daters were more adventurous and able to choose a date from a wider pool of people.

Online Dating Vs The Dating Agency

Dating agencies are either based upon a computer matching up key characteristics and giving you a compatibility rating or you would be sent various video profiles of individuals who matched your key requirements for a partner.
The problem is it can be very costly and time consuming and their are no guarantees'. I have tried dating agencies and to be honest... you would have more luck shopping at woolies to find a partner...
